Learning Not Waiting

Boston Medical Center, 2002

This interactive encourages families to use time in the pediatric waiting room as a learning opportunity in Boston Medical Center's innovative "Learning Not Waiting" initiative. A key concept: taking the style of social learning found in museums and apply it to other public environments such as hospital waiting rooms.

Rainforest Researchers CD-ROM

Tom Snyder Productions, 1997

Students work as part of a team of scientists to solve two challenging assignments about rainforest plants. Working collaboratively, students investigate real scientific challenges based on current research in tropical forests. Winner of Technology & Learning Award of Excellence, NewMedia Invision Award, Codie Award, and Parents' Choice Award.

TV & Me Chromakey Studio

The Children's Museum, Boston, 1995

This chromakey installation allows museum visitors to place themselves into a variety of video backgrounds. Backgrounds include: "The Smutty Pigs Show," "Danger: It's Lava!" and "The Big Train Coming at You Show." The format works extremely well for encouraging participation between multiple visitors -- currently we're exploring development of the next generation chromakey studio based on digital technologies.

Creating Spaces for Learning Website

The Children's Museum, Boston, 1997

Innovative Website developed in conjunction with MediaOne uses streaming video and QuickTime VR technologies to extend learning environments from the Museum to the home. Topic areas including "early literacy" and "song and movement" draw on state of the art Internet video technologies. Winner of Massachusetts Interactive Media Council (MIMC) Award, 1997, Best Nonprofit Website.

¡Dime! Interactive CD-ROM, DC Heath/Houghton Mifflin, 1994

Users create videos by dragging video sequences onto timeline and record narration (in Spanish). They can also add titles and music backgrounds to further personalize their creations. User-created segments can be saved for later playback and editing. Winner of NewMedia Invision Award of Excellence (1995).

Créa-dialogue

Discovering French Interactive, DC Heath/Houghton Mifflin, 1993

Users drag cartoon characters into position on screen and record conversations (in French) between them, allowing a wide range of creative dialogues. User's creations can be saved onto the hard drive, allowing "show and tell" between students using the program. Winner of Top Ten Highly Recommended Programs, in "CD-ROM for Schools," Macromedia People's Choice (1993), NewMedia Invision Award of Excellence (1994).

The Other Side

Tom Snyder Productions, 1999

Online multi-user game links students from around the country in a conflict resolution simulation in which two nations try to coexist while maintaining a stable economy, military responsibility, and national security. Teams of students communicate and negotiate with their peers around the country by entering strategic moves and sending messages over the Internet.
